Total consumption of fertilizers in New Zealand is around the 3 million MT mark.
About 90% of all fertilizers consumed goes to grow grass to feed cattle and sheep to support the dairy, meat and wool industries.
There are two major co-operatives vying for market share; Ravensdown Fertiliser Co-Operative and Ballance Agri-Nutrients. Ballance operates a granular urea plant at Kapuni whilst both companies have substantial assets in Single Super Phosphates (SSP).
Granular urea imports to New Zealand is around the range of 400,000 - 600,000 MT mark all subject to seasonality. Long term contracts with SABIC and PETRONAS support the majority of the imports with the occasional cargo from either Indonesia or P.R. China.
